Cook Family History

For a number of years Danny has researched our family tree.  Here is a brief lineage of our Cook family in the United States.

JOHANN PHILIPP KOCH [1809-1891] was our COOK family immigrant ancestor.  Johann emigrated from Alsbach, Hesse, Germany between 1828-1833 along with his mother ANNA-MARGARETHA HEYL, step-father PETER SCHMIDT and 5 siblings and two children of Anna-Margaretha and Peter.  They settled in Black Rock, western New York State and Johnann Philip in Lancaster, New York.  In his adult life, Johann Philipp increasingly used the Anglicized spelling of COOK as his family name.

In 1835 JOHANN PHILIPP KOCH married KATHARINA BARBARA HORNUNG [1815-1891] who emigrated from Friedrichstahal, Baden, Germany in 1833.  They had 11 children including LEWIS HENRY, SR [1839-1915].  Johann bought and sold a number of pieces of property and was a farmer near Buffalo.

In 1864 LEWIS HENRY COOK married CATHERINE HECKEMER [1845-1925] who had emigrated from Germany.  They had 9 children, their 1st born LEWIS HENRY, JR. [1864-1947].  Lewis Sr was a farmer like his father and his son.

In 1896 LEWIS JR. married LOUISE CATHERINE KNITTER [1876-1911].  Her parents and three older siblings also emigrated from Germany in 1872 on board the sailing ship the John Bertram.  They had four children, the oldest ELMER JOHN [1897-1981].

In 1919 ELMER JOHN married EVA LOVINA WILLIS [1900-1988].  EVA’s mother, MARY FLETCHER emigrated from Ireland in 1885.  They had two children, the oldest ARNOLD WILLIS [living] who is my father.  Elmer was a minister with the Free Methodist Church.

In 1945 ARNOLD COOK married ETHEL ELIZABETH PARK [living].  They have three children including DANNY LEIGH.  ARNOLD is a CPA, practiced accounting in Ellensburg, WA and later organized the Department of Business at Houghton College in New York State. In 1971 DANNY married GLENDA ANDREWS [living].  They have two children ANDREW LEIGH [living] and CAMILLA DAWN [living].  Danny and Glenda worked in Christian Ministry at Warm Beach Camp and Conference Center in Washington State for 10 years and with Compassion International in various locations for 26 years.  Danny has a line of photo note cards gleaned from his 25 years of international travel.
